Kids will learn how Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math work together with our fun, free activities:

  • Making original designs, memes, photos, and drawings for science and coding demonstrations

  • Coding simple programs from their own designs and memes

  • Modeling allergic reactions and other cell activities with our Giant Cell where kids and adults can “be” different organelles and compete for energy points

  • Math bingo

Discovery Center at Murfree Spring - National Chemistry Week: “Atoms and Molecules in S-P-A-A-A-C-E”

COST: Included with Discovery Center Admission - $8 per person, Children under 2 are free.

WHAT:  The 2018 theme for National Chemistry Week is “Chemistry is out of this world!”  Fun and family-friendly hands-on activities will include learning how chemists identify atoms and molecules in outer space by examining their “fingerprints in light”.  Participants will also explore atomic layers of carbon and build soccer ball-shaped models of C60 molecules that scientists using powerful infrared telescopes have found in signals from interstellar space. Resources for classroom activities will be freely available for teachers.

 

Chucalissa Archaeological Museum - Archaeology Day

WHAT: This family-friendly event offers visitors an opportunity to learn about the prehistoric Native Americans of Memphis through hands-on, engaging activities. Learn to make prehistoric tools & pottery, try using a prehistoric weapon called the atlatl, watch a demonstration of bead weaving, or join a guided hike of the nature trail.
 

Five in One Social Club - Marbling Workshop

WHAT: This workshop explores the beautiful art of marbling. We'll show you how to create patterns with special dyes and tools on the surface of thickened water. These designs transfer onto paper or fabric almost as if by magic!

Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum - Explore Steel Guitar (Ages 7+)

WHAT:  Despite the instrument’s relatively recent invention and evolution, the steel guitar has come to epitomize the sound of country music. In this hands-on program, musician/educators Adam Ollendorff and Robin Ruddy will provide a background of the steel guitar family as they explore the sounds of lap steel, pedal steel, and Dobro. Guests will be invited to try out some techniques following the presentation. Ollendorff has performed on steel guitar with Vince Gill, Loretta Lynn, and Kacey Musgraves. Ruddy has toured with Vince Gill, Ray Stevens, and Rod Stewart.

 

 

Murfreesboro Parks and Rec - Perform Murfreesboro Makeup Workshop (Ages 12-17)

Spend a day immersed in special effects makeup at The Washington Theatre at Patterson Park Community Center! Learn to apply blood and gore makeup. This class is great for any 12-17 teenager who is interested in theatre or special effects. Teens that take this program may be given the opportunity to help assist with special effects makeup for a Perform Murfreesboro Production!

The Discovery Center Education Team will be onsite as part of the Tennessee STEAM Festival with exciting hands-on activities that explore the Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics within a bowling alley and video arcade!
