Collierville Burch Library - A Parent's Guide to STEM Education: Roles, Responsibilities, and Rewards (Adults Only)

MTSU @ Arrington Vineyards - October Skies at Arrington Vineyards

WHAT:  The MTSU departments of Physics and Astronomy, The School of Agriculture and the Department of Art and Design will present a night of Art Projects, Wine Tasting and Star Gazing at Arrington Vineyard.   Experts from these departments will be offering artist led painting with a twist and branded coaster creations, will be giving short talks about both the wines and the night sky, and will be providing the opportunity to look through telescopes and investigate the night sky.  This event is for community members who are older than 21 only. Limit 150 adults.


Five in One Social Club - Mardi Gras Masks

WHAT: Just in time for Halloween, join us in the Clubhouse for mask making! We'll show you how to design shapes (like noses and ears) out of chipboard to turn a simple paper mask into something stupendous! We'll have lots of fun things on hand for you to decorate your mask with: colorful felt, feathers, ribbons and sparkly bits.


Bristol YMCA - After School STEAM

WHAT: The Bristol, TN YMCA will host hands on science activities for kids in the after school program on October 17, 4:00-5:30.  Activities include Make Your Own UV Wristband and Fun with “Gluep” Polymers.  All supplies will be provided.


Nashville Public Library, Main Branch - E-Textiles (Ages 12-18)

WHAT:  In this workshop, patrons will work with conductive thread, LED lights, batteries, and sewing supplies to make a wearable cuff that will light up the night!  Great for fashion, safety, or just for showing off your STEAM skills.

Great Smoky Mountains Institute - Monarch Tagging and Butterfly Identification

WHEN:  Wednesday, October 17, 10:15 am - 2:00 pm.

COST: $5 per person. This is a first come, first served opportunity limited to 25 people.  (Please no more than 8 people per party). Email monarchs@gsmit.org

WHAT:  Who doesn’t love running around in a sunny field with a butterfly net? Monarchs migrate en masse to Mexico every year for the winter, and we would like to learn more about their migration and population status by tagging them. Tremont volunteers have been tagging monarch butterflies in Cade’s Cove for many years. Participants also catch and identify other butterfly and insect species.  Join us in the field for a great day of frolicking for science!

Age Group: Any age. Children under 18 need an adult guardian in attendance. 

Where and when to meet:  10:15 am at the visitor information shelter at the beginning of the Cades Cove driving loop in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. We will caravan to the fields.  We’ll be out for 2-4 hours, ending around 1:30 or 2pm (or later if the weather is nice).  

What to wear:
Field clothing, especially long pants, and hard, protective shoes.

What to bring:
Please bring your signed Tremont and NPS waiver forms if you haven’t already sent them back to Juli by your tagging date.
Plenty of water
Lunch and snacks
Sun screen and a hat for protection from the sun


Murfreesboro Parks and Rec., North Murfreesboro Greenway - Fall Frolic and Foliage Hike (Adults)

WHAT:  Enjoy the fall colors and crisp weather at this naturalist led hike.  Come out to the beautiful North Murfreesboro Greenway and learn the native trees and wildflowers that are showing off during this season, as well as the critters that are preparing for winter.  Find migratory birds, resident squirrels, and much more along the beautiful trail which follows the Stones River.  Easy hike along a paved trail.  Meet at Central Valley Trailhead.

Hands On! Discovery Center - Fossil Fun

WHEN:  Tuesday, October 16 - Thursday, October 18, 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

REGION: East Tennessee

WHERE: Hands On! Discovery Center, Gray

COST: $3 per person for members, $5 per person for non-members.

WHAT: Stop by anytime between 1pm-5pm to examine real fossils on National Fossil Day with a “picking” activity featuring micro-sediment from Aurora, NC*.  Play our Fossil or Fake game and use plaster to create your own fossil cast replica to take home.  Children must be supervised at all times. Materials fee of $3 per person for Hands On! Discovery Center members, $5 per person for non-members, while supplies last. (*All fossils and sediment must remain on site for scientific research purposes.)
