WHAT:  La vie est belle! Celebrate the joie de vivre of Paris at the Frist! In 1900, the City of Light hosted L’Exposition universelle, a world’s fair, to usher in the new century with innovation and prosperity. Visitors of all ages are invited to enjoy a day of performances and activities inspired by the exhibition Paris 1900: City of Entertainment and the International Exposition.

Discovery Center at Murfree Spring - National Chemistry Week: “Atoms and Molecules in S-P-A-A-A-C-E”

WHEN:  Sunday, October 21, 2018, 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

REGION:  Middle Tennessee

WHERE: Discovery Center, Murfreesboro

COST: Included with Discovery Center Admission - $8 per person, Children under 2 are free.

WHAT:  The 2018 theme for National Chemistry Week is “Chemistry is out of this world!”  Fun and family-friendly hands-on activities will include learning how chemists identify atoms and molecules in outer space by examining their “fingerprints in light”.  Participants will also explore atomic layers of carbon and build soccer ball-shaped models of C60 molecules that scientists using powerful infrared telescopes have found in signals from interstellar space. Resources for classroom activities will be freely available for teachers.

 

Chickasaw State Park - Frontier Days

Hands On! Discovery Center - Colorful Chemistry

WHEN:  Tuesday, October 16 - Sunday, November 11

REGION: East Tennessee

WHERE: Hands On! Discovery Center, Gray

COST: Free with paid general admission.

WHAT:  Join us in celebration of National Chemistry Week.  Learn all about the science of chemistry, color, and chromatography.  You will even get the chance to make your own piece of colored chalk and a tie dye masterpiece made with the science of chromatography.  The Discovery Lab will be open by announcement periodically throughout each day. 

 

Hands On! Discovery Center - Reverse Engineering (Ages 3+)

WHEN:  Tuesday, October 16 - Thursday, October 18

REGION: East Tennessee

WHERE: Hands On! Discovery Center, Gray

COST: Free with paid general admission.

WHAT: Join us for some reverse engineering and test your skills on lots of items adults would never let you take apart.  Dismantle computer towers, phones, keyboards, and more!  Reverse Engineering will be setup on our Discovery Cart throughout each day.  (*Contains small parts that may not suitable for children 3 and under.) 

 

Hands On! Discovery Center - Star Party

WHEN:  Friday, October 12, 3:00 pm - 9:00 pm

REGION: East Tennessee

WHERE: Hands On! Discovery Center, Gray

COST: Free with paid general admission.

WHAT:  Join us for some out-of-this-world star gazing!  We have both a solar observation telescope for safe daytime viewing and a traditional night viewing scope for your viewing pleasure.  Weather permitting, stay tuned to social media for more information and updates. Limited access to the scopes based on attendees. 

 

Memphis Botanic Garden - Origami in the Garden

WHEN:  October 12-21, 2018

WHAT: From paper planes to NASA robots, Origami is all around us. These 16 museum-quality fine art, outdoor, metal sculptures will be displayed around the garden. Hands On! Discovery Center - October Art Studio Programs

WHAT:  Join us for Hokusai inspired watercolor resist wave paintings, leaf plate rubbings, and a jack-o-lantern paper craft in our Art Studio.  All activities are self-guided with instructions provided, with facilitated programs announced periodically throughout each day.  Stop by and get creative! 

 

Adventureworks Zipline Forest at Fontanel - Zipline Science

WHEN:  Monday through Saturday, 9:30 am, 12:30 pm, 2:30 pm, and 5:00 pm; Sunday, 12:00 pm, 2:30 pm, 5:00 pm.

WHAT: Zipping is a thrilling adventure with a bird’s eye view! Families, friends, and groups of all kinds love soaring through the green hills of Fontanel while learning about the physics and engineering of ziplines!. Zippers sail through the air on steel cables, secured in a safety harness and attached to a zip pulley system. The special STEAM Festival version of the tour is only available during operating hours October 12-21.
