Discovery Center at Murfree Spring - National Chemistry Week: “Atoms and Molecules in S-P-A-A-A-C-E”

WHAT:  The 2018 theme for National Chemistry Week is “Chemistry is out of this world!”  Fun and family-friendly hands-on activities will include learning how chemists identify atoms and molecules in outer space by examining their “fingerprints in light”.  Participants will also explore atomic layers of carbon and build soccer ball-shaped models of C60 molecules that scientists using powerful infrared telescopes have found in signals from interstellar space. Resources for classroom activities will be freely available for teachers.


Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum - Explore Steel Guitar (Ages 7+)

WHAT:  Despite the instrument’s relatively recent invention and evolution, the steel guitar has come to epitomize the sound of country music. In this hands-on program, musician/educators Adam Ollendorff and Robin Ruddy will provide a background of the steel guitar family as they explore the sounds of lap steel, pedal steel, and Dobro. Guests will be invited to try out some techniques following the presentation. Ollendorff has performed on steel guitar with Vince Gill, Loretta Lynn, and Kacey Musgraves. Ruddy has toured with Vince Gill, Ray Stevens, and Rod Stewart.



Murfreesboro Parks and Rec - Perform Murfreesboro Makeup Workshop (Ages 12-17)

Spend a day immersed in special effects makeup at The Washington Theatre at Patterson Park Community Center! Learn to apply blood and gore makeup. This class is great for any 12-17 teenager who is interested in theatre or special effects. Teens that take this program may be given the opportunity to help assist with special effects makeup for a Perform Murfreesboro Production!

WHAT:  Old Crow Medicine Show founder and Grammy-winning musician Ketch Secor has teamed up with Ashley Bryan Award-winning illustrator Higgins Bond to createLorraine, a sweeping, epic Americana story about the power of music and family. Secor will read from the book and play some tunes on fiddle and harmonica. Secor will also talk about his early days of learning to become a performer and the American folk music traditions that inspired Lorraine. He will sign copies of the book following the program.

Middle Tennessee State University - October Sky Family Movie Night

WHEN:  Friday, October 19, 2018, 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

COST: Free movie and activities, concessions for a small fee

WHAT:  Come enjoy space themed activities for all ages, presented by multiple MTSU departments. Activities begin at 6:00 pm, followed by a screening of the classic tale of Homer Hickam, October Sky, at 7:00 pm. Don’t leave early! After the film, the Art Department will be creating STEAM themed medallions using a metal pour technique that you won’t want to miss!


MTSU Todd Hall Foundry - Aluminum Casting Workshop

WHAT:  Associate Professor Michael Baggarly and Studio Technician Stephen Levenhagen will lead an aluminum casting workshop allowing participants to create commemorative medallions celebrating STEAM at Middle Tennessee State University. The workshop is free to participants of all ages, but spots are limited. The medallions will be cast in molten aluminum at the end of the workshop and will be a visual treat for all in attendance.
